Petrobras announces new oil discovery
Petrobras, Brazil’s state-controlled oil and gas giant, announced in a Tuesday securities filing that it has discovered “an accumulation of oil in ultra-deep waters of the Potiguar Basin.” This basin is located in the so-called Equatorial Margin, a coastal area straddling Brazil’s North and part of its Northeast regions.
- The discovery is located in the Anhangá exploratory well, on the coast between the northeastern states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, at a water depth of 2,196 meters in the Equatorial Margin.
State of play. This is already the second discovery in the Potiguar Basin this year, preceded by proof of the presence of hydrocarbons in the Pitu Oeste Well. “These discoveries still require further assessment,” Petrobras told investors. The state-controlled company is the sole operator of both concessions and holds a 100 percent stake in them.
