Electoral courts draw AI line in the sand ahead of elections

Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court convened yesterday to decide on rules for the upcoming municipal elections in October, regulating, above all, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) during the campaign.
👉 Why it matters. Disinformation has been a major issue in Brazil’s most recent elections. With the advent and ubiquity of AI, that problem becomes even harder to solve for the country’s electoral officials. Brazil will hold elections in its 5,568 municipalities in October, when voters will elect mayors and city councilors for four-year terms.
Cármen Lúcia. The resolution proposal was brought forward by electoral judge Cármen Lúcia, who also serves on the Supreme Court. She will be made chief electoral justice in August and will lead the court during the municipal elections.
