What if we stopped raising cattle in the Amazon?
Not long ago, plant-based meat was the hottest thing in the food industry. Slick marketing and consumers’ environmental concerns drove fake meat sales to grow by 74 percent between 2018 and 2021 — but growth has stalled since. Despite its initial global success, fake meat has never been that big a deal in Brazil, and one lawmaker is trying to stop that from ever happening.
Driving the news. Congressman Tião Medeiros of Paraná introduced a bill banning “private research, production, reproduction, import, export, transport, and commercialization of laboratory-grown meat under any technique and its by-products.”
