Lula meets with South American leaders
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today hosts the leaders of all South American countries in the capital, Brasília. Peru will be represented by its prime minister, as President Dina Boluarte is legally prevented from leaving her country. According to Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Lula has three clear objectives:
- Resume regional dialogue;
- Pursue an agenda of cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, health, and the fight against organized crime;
- Create, in the longer term, a new South American integration body that can replace or reorganize the Union of South American Nations (Unasur).
Why it matters. Mediating a summit with all regional leaders is part of Lula’s goal to reestablish Brazil as a regional leader again and leave a diplomatic legacy.
