A victory for Lula, but also Lira
Lawmakers in Brazil’s lower house on Tuesday night overwhelmingly approved the core text of the government’s proposal for a new fiscal framework to replace the public spending cap approved in 2016. The proposal obliterated the 257-vote threshold, obtaining support from 372 of 513 House members â five more than last week’s vote to fast-track the bill.
- Today, the House will vote on amendments to the core text of the proposal. After that, the bill must go to the Senate, where it should count on the support of Rodrigo Pacheco, who presides over the upper chamber.
Why it matters. After suffering several recent defeats in Congress, the Luiz InĂĄcio Lula da Silva administration needed a win â especially on the most important piece of legislation to come to a vote since he took office.
