Brazil declares 180-day health emergency
Early in April, Brazilian authorities celebrated the results of avian influenza tests in 33,000 hens, which showed that the country remained free of the disease â while it spread in Asia, Europe, parts of the U.S., and Latin America. That is no longer the case, however.
- The Brazilian Agriculture Ministry declared a state of animal health emergency for 180 days, as the country confirmed its first bird flu infections. So far, eight H5N1 infections have been verified, coming in the southeastern states of EspĂrito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.
- Authorities, however, stressed that Brazil’s status at the World Organization for Animal Health regarding bird flu remains unaltered, as none of the cases were found on commercial poultry farms.
