What to expect from Lula’s China visit
In two weeks, President Luiz InĂĄcio Lula da Silva will visit Xi Jinping, who recently kicked off a historic third term as the leader of China. Lula will be accompanied by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, former President Dilma Rousseff (who will take over the presidency of the New Development Bank, or BRICS Bank), and a group of 70 business leaders.
Why it matters. Part of Lula’s agenda will be to undo some of the damage done to Brazil-China relations by Jair Bolsonaro â who, during his four years in power, was the most belligerent Brazilian president toward China since the 1970s. (Mr. Bolsonaro’s allies, including senior members of his administration, repeated Sinophobic tropes for years.)
