Lula’s UN success gets a reality check
The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with a resolution calling for the end of the conflict. Brazilian diplomacy celebrated the wording of the text, which was softer on Russia than previous resolutions. Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Ministry says that, at this point, the goal is to find peace and not to pin blame.
Yes, but … While Brazilian diplomacy gloated about its move by saying it would help whip support for the resolution, the vote count proved it wrong. The new resolution received the backing of 141 countries — the same number as a more strongly worded March 2022 resolution. This time around, seven countries sided with Russia, two more than a year ago.
