Mounting evidence against Bolsonaro
The Superior Electoral Court reached a unanimous decision last night that further complicates Jair Bolsonaro’s legal situation. In a case that could render the former president ineligible for office, justices admitted into evidence a draft of a putschist decree found in the home of Jair Bolsonaro’s former justice minister.
- The draft decree aimed to place electoral courts under a state of emergency and create a committee with the power to nullify the results of the presidential election — which would be blatantly unconstitutional.
State of play. The case in question is based on a complaint filed by the center-left Democratic Labor Party (PDT). It argues that Mr. Bolsonaro abused his political power and illegally used official communication channels when, while still president, he hosted foreign ambassadors to give a presentation designed to sow distrust in Brazil’s voting system.
