Lula’s official certification scheduled
The Superior Electoral Court has confirmed that the certification of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as the country’s next president will take place on December 12 in Brasília.
Why it matters. The certification ceremony is the final formal hoop to jump through before Lula is deemed fit to take power on Inauguration Day (January 1).
Driving the news. Since the October 30 runoff election, supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro have staged anti-democratic protests in the hopes of overturning the results and preventing Lula from taking office.
