President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday called for international governance of artificial intelligence at the G7 summit in Italy.

“We need international and intergovernmental governance of artificial intelligence, in which all States have a seat,” he said in a speech.

“An AI [regulatory framework] that also has the face of the Global South, that strengthens cultural and linguistic diversity, and that develops the digital economy of our countries,” he added.

The Italian hosts invited leaders from several non-G7 countries to participate this year, including the presidents of Algeria, Kenya, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine, and the prime minister of India. Pope Francis also made an appearance.

Lula further advocated for taxing the super-rich, a proposal that Brazil already included in its ongoing G20 agenda. “It’s past time for the super-rich to pay their fair share of taxes. This excessive concentration of power and income represents a risk to democracy,” Lula added.

Concerning the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Lula said that “in Gaza, we see the legitimate right to defense transform into the right to revenge,” which led Brazil to support the South African petition against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Later, Brazil separately joined other countries in asking judges at the ICJ to declare Israel’s occupation of Palestine illegal following a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly.
