Senate to vote on relief package on Monday

calamity Senate set to take center stage in remainder of 2019

On Thursday night, the lower house passed a relief package that will give informal workers and disabled people an emergency salary of BRL 600 (USD 120) for the next three months. More detail on the measure can be found in our Daily Briefing, for premium subscribers only. This so-called “corona-voucher,” however, will only be voted on by the Senate next week, according to the government’s whip in the upper chamber, Senator Eduardo Gomes.

The vote will take place remotely — on Monday at 4 pm (Brasília time).

So far, around two-thirds of the money announced by the government to cushion the economic blow of the Covid-19 outbreak has yet to reach Brazilians. And as the Senate pushes that vote until next week, the relief payments will also take a little longer to be released.
