Police in Brasília opened an investigation into a decomposing human body found Thursday night in woods close to the presidential palace.

A staffer of the federal Institutional Security Office (GSI), which oversees the safety of presidential buildings, found the body last night while preparing for a training exercise. The GSI’s press office told The Brazilian Report it immediately alerted the state police.

Local police confirmed they found the remains of a human adult “in an advanced state of decomposition, with the skull and arms separated from the body.” They also found a cell phone and a wallet.

State military police remained at the scene until the arrival of the civil police, responsible for the investigation.
