Ebrard becomes Mexico wild card after losing Morena primary

One of President AMLO’s closest allies is threatening to split from the party after Claudia Sheinbaum beat him to the presidential nomination

It is a “civic association, not a political party,” former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard told supporters this week as he launched his brand-new political movement, “El Camino de México” (A Path for Mexico), with words that left more questions than answers.

The country’s former diplomatic czar has been President Andrés Manuel “AMLO” López Obrador’s right-hand man on many issues over the years, rising to national prominence and coming close to securing AMLO’s endorsement to succeed him. 

Mr. Ebrard says he is not breaking up AMLO’s ruling Morena party, but merely trying to create an organization for those who currently disagree with its views.

He promises to begin traveling the country this week to ensure nationwide reach for his organization, collecting signatures and calling on lawmakers to join him on a journey where the destination remains unclear.

His actions appear to be born of frustration, coming less than two weeks after the Morena party confirmed former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as its candidate for the June 2024 presidential election.

AMLO promised that he would not hand-pick a successor, but that the party’s candidate would be determined by a series of independent nationwide polls, in which only Mr. Ebrard and Ms. Sheinbaum...
