Brazil, where a year feels like a decade

Brazilians are constantly saying on the internet that you could die here for almost any reason, but not boredom. Famously, it is said that Brazil is not for beginners.

There is a lot of truth in these jokes, especially if you are somehow connected to Brazil’s daily — and often tense — political realities. Unsurprisingly, no one in the country is more involved than President Lula, who took office for the third time in January

But does it really feel like Lula has had just a year back in office? Not to most Brazilians.

Since his inauguration on January 1, Lula has had to deal with a violent mob of far-right supporters storming public buildings in Brasília, the exposure of the humanitarian disaster of the Yanomami indigenous people, numerous political clashes with the opposition, and, to name just one of many examples, a delicate diplomatic stalemate regarding Brazil’s position on the conflict in Gaza.

Not to mention the many challenges his government faces in the environmental field, an area that many NGOs and experts say was neglected and dismantled under the previous administration. Other climate-related issues, such as deadly rains in regions with poor housing conditions, also add to the list.

It is fair to remember that, well, this was only the first year. So the captain better hold on tight for the next three.
