5G auction: what to expect
Today, Brazil begins its long-awaited auction of 5G frequencies to service providers, an event which should last two days. The numbers surrounding the auction are huge — and so are expectations.
- It will be the biggest auction of its kind in the world, with 3.7 Gigahertz at stake. Assets are split between four frequency bands: 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz (considered to be the most attractive of the auction), and 26 GHz.
- Per telecoms regulator Anatel, 15 companies have placed bids. They include major sector players, investment funds, and small providers which have banded together.
What to look out for. Brasília correspondent Janaína Camelo spoke with Eduardo Tude, a partner at consultancy firm Teleco, and Marcos Ferrari, CEO of telecom providers union Conexis, about what we should expect from the 5G auction. These interviews were edited for brevity and clarity:
