Municipal authorities in Guarulhos, Greater São Paulo, announced that its intensive care bed occupancy rate has reached 100 percent. The city is Brazil’s 13th-most populated, with 1.4 million inhabitants. It is the second-largest in the state, behind São Paulo.
Local government officials have promised to transform regular hospital beds to treat severe patients in order to cope with the health network’s overcrowding. Official data shows the occupancy rate of regular beds hovering around 75 percent as of the weekend.
As of June 1, Guarulhos recorded 3,056 Covid-19 infections and 293 deaths. The state of São Paulo has started a gradual reopening program — which experts overwhelmingly condemn as a “rushed” move.
