Pension reform vote a rare win for Petro in Congress

President Gustavo Petro of Colombia secured his first major legislative victory of 2024, providing much-needed relief for his left-wing coalition. After prolonged opposition to Mr. Petro, Congress finally approved his long-awaited pension reform this month.
- The House passed the extensive pension reform with an 86-32 majority, following the Senate’s approval two months prior.
In a hurry. Mr. Petro achieved his desired reform despite criticism from House lawmakers, who condemned the lack of debate and amendment opportunities, accusing the administration of rushing the bill before the June 20 recess.
