Brazil led Chinese investments abroad
Over 13 percent of Chinese capital invested in the world last year went to Brazil, according to a report published today by the China-Brazil Business Council. The country also gobbled up 48 percent of Chinese investments made in South America between 2005 and 2021.
- Worldwide, Brazil was China’s fourth-biggest investment destination over the same span, receiving 4.8 percent of its capital invested abroad — behind the U.S., Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Why it matters. Foreign direct investment from China grew by 210 percent in 2021 to reach USD 5.9 billion, returning to pre-pandemic levels (when adjusted for inflation).
