Bordering Rio Grande do Sul, which has been inundated by floods in recent weeks, the state of Santa Catarina is also facing heavy rains and damages, although the situation there is less serious.

From May 17 to 20, the volume of rain was higher than expected for the entire month. Some cities had to provide shelters and distribute basic food baskets and drinking water, among other emergency aid. At least 10 city halls have declared a state of emergency.

The cities of Vidal Ramos, Rio do Sul, Lontras, Botuverá, and Taió have seen the highest quantities of rainfall.

More than 700 people were outside their homes in Santa Catarina on the night of May 20, mainly in the Vale do Itajaí region, according to the Civil Defense. To date, one death has been recorded, that of an elderly man whose car was dragged by the water. One person is missing.

The weather forecast indicates more rain between on May 23 and 24. Despite the cold, the rain is not expected to last long.

In Rio Grande do Sul, in turn, on top of the cold, rain is still a big concern. Especially in the southeast of the state, the risk of flooding is considered very high
