Internet access among students has increased, but inequality persists

Between 2009 and 2019, the decade before the pandemic began, school students’ internet access increased considerably in Brazil. For students in the final year of elementary school, for example, access almost doubled. But that does not mean that connectivity has become less unequal.

By the numbers. A survey published this week by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on school health showed that the share of students with internet at home jumped from 52.9 to 93.6 percent from 2009 to 2019.
