News website G1 reports that the five Brazilian cities with the highest number of Covid-19 infections registered a 30-percent increase in daily deaths from all causes between March 16 and April 25, when compared to the 2016-2019 average for the same period.

In Manaus, the first city to see its healthcare system collapse under the weight of the Covid-19 outbreak, the number of daily deaths is 108 percent higher than the historical average. In Recife, where nearly all intensive care beds have been filled, the increase is 44 percent. The other cities are São Paulo (+28%), Rio de Janeiro (+19%) and Fortaleza (+14%). According to experts, the data is proof of massive underreporting of Covid-19 cases, which The Brazilian Report has flagged on numerous occasions.
