When leaving their front doors to go and vote in Sunday’s general election, Brazilians did not know what to expect. Opinion polls suggested challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva could win more than 50 percent of the votes and clinch the vote in the first round, while several incidents of political violence throughout the campaign left some wary to show their colors during their trips to polling stations.
