São Paulo lawmakers reject lockdown proposal

The São Paulo State Congress approved a bill to bring forward the July 9 state holiday to Monday — turning the state capital’s five-day “mega holiday” into six days. The move is an attempt to drive social isolation rates up. Meanwhile, lawmakers voted down an amendment that would have decreed a full-scale lockdown in São Paulo between June 1 and 15.

Governor João Doria has said time and again, that a lockdown would be his last resort — but he has made it clear that should social isolation rates remain below 50 percent, radical measures will become unavoidable. On Wednesday, São Paulo registered social isolation levels of just 51 percent, despite the holiday.
