The Brazilian Report shortlisted for four Digiday Media Awards

The Digiday Media Awards announced the finalists for its 2024 Media Awards, and The Brazilian Report is competing in four categories: Best Story, Newsletter, Podcast, and Livestream.

The award honors factors such as integration of emerging technology, audience engagement, and unique content formats, taking quantifiable metrics and real-world impact into consideration.

The announcement comes less than three weeks after The Brazilian Report won Best News Website in the Americas for a small or local newsroom in the 2024 Digital Media Americas Awards, by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), a non-governmental organization made up of 76 national newspaper associations, 12 news agencies, new regional press organizations, and many individual newspaper executives in 100 countries.

“This is a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about our newsroom’s hard work, dedication, and talent,” said editor-in-chief Gustavo Ribeiro. “I’m incredibly proud of how our team has consistently raised the bar, delivering impactful journalism that resonates with our audience.”

Digiday said that the work nominated for this year’s awards “demonstrated that brands are leveraging emerging technologies and media to offer interactive and engaging experiences to many audiences.”

Live Stream

The Brazilian Report was praised for its YouTube broadcast of 2023’s January 8 riots in Brasília, when a far-right protest derailed into insurrection. A mob of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed and ransacked government buildings, motivated by a belief that throwing the country into chaos would create the conditions for a military coup that would bring Mr. Bolsonaro back into power, just a week after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had been sworn in as president.

Editor-in-chief Gustavo Ribeiro and Brasília correspondent Cedê Silva gave context and analyzed the effects of that crucial moment for Brazilian democracy. In the following days, members of The Brazilian Report newsroom gave dozens of interviews to the foreign press, including Vox, Axios, and CNN International — explaining the events in Brasília to the world.

Best Story

A month later, the newsroom published an investigation nominated for the Best Story category. Our journalists revealed a plan to hack the mobile phone of Alexandre de Moraes, Brazil’s chief electoral justice, and sparked an investigation that ultimately led to the indictment of a congresswoman.

Infamous Brazilian hacker Walter Delgatti was hired to break into Justice Moraes’s cell phone to look for dirt on him and sow distrust in the 2022 presidential race.

The investigation led to Mr. Delgatti’s arrest. He later told lawmakers in the select committee on the January 8 riots that he was given a mission by then-President Jair Bolsonaro himself to discredit the electoral system.

Best Newsletter

Our three newsletters — Brazil Daily, Brazil Weekly, and Latin America Weekly — made the cut for best newsletter. In last year’s edition of the Digital Media Americas Awards, The Brazilian Report won the prize for Best Newsletter for a small or local company.

Best Podcast

Launched in 2018, our Explaining Brazil podcast brings new content every week — and from time to time special series such as those on Brazil’s independence bicentennial, the country’s democratic constitution, and the 60th anniversary of the 1964 military coup.
