Covid-19 deaths double, but denialism endures

The latest coronavirus update by the Health Ministry shows that Covid-19 deaths in Brazil jumped from 486 a week ago to 1,223 on Sunday — 2.5 times more. Still, coronavirus denialism remains a thing.

Supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro were seen on São Paulo’s Paulista Avenue this weekend, mocking the fatal victims of the disease. A small group of Covid-19 denialists paraded with a fake casket and cursed São Paulo Governor João Doria — who has been an adamant supporter of social isolation measures.

Also on Sunday, a motorcade in the city defended the president’s plans to end isolation measures and demanded the impeachment of Mr. Doria, even calling the clearly conservative governor a “communist.”

Meanwhile, Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta said Brazil will face its worst stretch of the Covid-19 pandemic in May and June — once again urging the importance of social isolation.
