In Uruguay, cases sharply decline before start of vaccination rollout

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) used Uruguay as an example of where the number of new Covid-19 cases has dropped throughout 2021, especially as the rest of Latin America struggles to keep the pandemic under control.

According to the organization, no other country had  “more drastic reductions” than Uruguay, adding that the nation of 3.5 million inhabitants managed to overcome its infection peak by “implementing public health measures to control the virus” — such as prohibiting crowds.

On January 14, Uruguay had 1,515 new coronavirus cases, the highest number for a single day since the pandemic started. One month later, after reinforcing social isolation measures, cases decreased to an average of 500 per day. Uruguay has recorded over 54,000 cases and 591 confirmed coronavirus deaths.

With 162 fatalities per million inhabitants, the country has the fifth-lowest mortality rate in the Americas. Uruguay’s vaccination campaign will begin on March 1.
