São Paulo has joined a list of other Brazilian states which have canceled their Carnival celebrations this year. Furthermore, the state administration decided to revoke the public holiday of February 15 and 16, though the São Paulo stock exchange will not operate on either day.
With the decision, São Paulo follows Bahia, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Minas Gerais, Maranhão, and Mato Grosso do Sul in canceling the holiday. Southern state capitals Florianópolis and Porto Alegre opted for the same move.
In Rio de Janeiro, where Carnival is a holiday by law, parties and street parades are forbidden.
