São Paulo: Lawmakers invade field hospital

On Thursday, five state lawmakers invaded a field hospital in São Paulo claiming they had the right to inspect the location. According to newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo, the politicians were accompanied by aides and supporters. The publication also reported the group made use of brute force to enter the field hospital. The group claimed it was inspecting irregularities related to the functioning of the hospital.

The institution is currently treating 407 low- and medium-risk Covid-19 patients — but has the capacity to host up to 1,800. São Paulo Mayor Bruno Covas stated that the hospital has already treated more than 2,800 people.

In response to the invasion, the city of São Paulo released a statement claiming the group acted in a “disrespectful manner, harassing patients and employees verbally and morally, and putting their own health at risk.” It also reiterated its “total repudiation for violent attitudes and deliberate actions to try to deceive public opinion.”
