Brazil’s Supreme Court Chief Justice on Covid-19 protocol

Supreme Court Chief Justice Dias Toffoli underwent surgery on Saturday to drain an abscess. While the procedure went well, according to a statement issued by the Supreme Court, the justice showed symptoms “suggesting a Covid-19 infection.” He awaits his test results and is being closely monitored.

Mr. Toffoli will take a seven-day leave of absence, Justice Luiz Fux will take over as acting chief justice for this period. The duration of his leave, however, can be extended depending on the test results.

According to the Supreme Court’s chief health official, Mr. Toffoli had been tested for Covid-19 as recently as May 20 — but no infection had been detected.
