According to journalist Jamil Chade, from news website UOL, Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Ministry — led by cabinet minister Ernesto Araújo — complained about references made in a World Health Organization resolution on “reproductive and sexual services.” Besides Brazil, the U.S. was the only country to show discontent about the document.
Since Jair Bolsonaro took office, Brazil has avoided being part of measures related to gender and sexual health. Conservative Brazilian authorities fear these guidelines could lead to legalizing abortion, condemned by the government and its supporters. The report criticized by the Foreign Affairs Ministry also concerns violence against women during the pandemic, a problem that is becoming apparent in Brazil.
