São Paulo extends quarantine

After previously announcing a “slow-and-steady” process to reopen São Paulo’s economy, scheduled to begin on May 11, Governor João Dória has backpedaled and opted instead for a three-week extension of the quarantine — which will now remain in place until May 31. The governor said Brazil is going through the most challenging period of the last 100 years, adding that making this decision “is not an easy task, as no human being feels pleasure in giving bad news.”

This morning, the head of the state’s Covid-19 committee, David Uip, announced he is taking a second leave of absence for health reasons. He tested positive for Covid-19 in March.

With 39,928 confirmed Covid-19 cases as of yesterday, São Paulo is responsible for one-third of Brazil’s cases.
