According to the latest figures released by the Health Ministry, Brazil recorded 610 new Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking total deaths up to 9,146. New cases jumped by 9,988 today, meaning the country has registered an overall 135,106 coronavirus infections.

Brazil now has the seventh-highest number of confirmed infections in the world. And the word confirmed is important, as experts have warned for months of massive underreporting in the country. Many studies suggest that Brazil is likely to become the world’s new Covid-19 epicenter. Using official data from the Health Ministry, the Covid-19 Brazil Portal — created by researchers from several Brazilian universities — estimates that the real number of infections is somewhere between 1.6 and 2 million, instead of the confirmed figure of over 135,000.
