According to Irish tabloid Extra, Brazilians are the “vast majority” of people who have tried to scam the government in order to obtain a three-month EUR 350 weekly payment, given to workers who lost their jobs during the Covid-19 outbreak. Roughly EUR 1 million has been saved since the scheme was discovered. Media reports indicate as many as 250 people were involved in the scam.
Several Brazilians were found in the Dublin Airport attempting to return home, after having fraudulently made unemployment claims. The measures apply to any person living in Ireland and fired during the pandemic, not to those who claim unemployment benefits and then leave the country. According to Irish census data around 8,000 Brazilians live in the capital.
