Pernambuco joins list of states extending quarantine

Following the examples of Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas, and São Paulo, the state of Pernambuco will also extend its quarantine rules. According to a decree by Governor Paulo Câmara, stay-home guidelines will remain in force until at least May 15. The decision states that public spaces — as well as non-essential businesses — must remain closed, while also suspending classes until May 30. As of Wednesday, Pernambuco had 6,194 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 538 deaths. The lethality rate of 8 percent is above the national average of 7 percent. At least 1,074 people have recovered in the state.
