São Paulo has run 35,000 Covid-19 tests since start of pandemic

The Butantan Institute has claimed that the state of São Paulo has zeroed its backlog of Covid-19 tests, which amounted to 17,000. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the state of São Paulo — which is the epicenter of Covid-19 in Brazil — has run 35,600 tests, according to David Uip, who coordinates the state’s coronavirus committee. Of that total, 24,000 exams have been carried out across the state since April 9.

The numbers are the result of the integration between 38 state laboratories that are being used to analyze the exams — 12 of which are already operating at maximum capacity. Still, the number of tests is far too low. São Paulo is Brazil’s most populous state, with over 44 million people — which means that only 795 out of every 1 million residents are being tested.

São Paulo has confirmed almost 16,000 coronavirus infections and 1,134 deaths.
