Official numbers from the Health Ministry showed that Brazil recorded another 165 coronavirus deaths over the last 24 hours, bringing the total up to 2,906. In the space of a week, the country has seen 982 fatal cases of the disease, and actual numbers are expected to be considerably higher.
In terms of total cases, the country recorded a similar growth to yesterday’s figures, adding 2,678 infections to the total, which now sits at 45,757.
The disparity between official numbers and the actual situation of coronavirus infection in Brazil is likely explained by the gross lack of testing around the country. Only those patients who are admitted to the hospital are tested for the virus, with anyone without severe symptoms sent to rest at home. The state of São Paulo announced this morning that it now plans to hospitalize those who present mild symptoms of Covid-19.
