Rio Governor Wilson Witzel tests positive for Covid-19

Rio de Janeiro’s conservative state governor Wilson Witzel published a video on his official Twitter disclosing that he has tested positive for Covid-19.

Mr. Witzel said he had “not been feeling well since last Friday,” and that he will continue working from the Laranjeiras Palace, the official governor’s residence, “respecting social isolation and medical recommendations.”

Since the coronavirus reached Brazil, late in February, Mr. Witzel has been opposed to President Jair Bolsonaro’s Covid-19 denialism. The Rio de Janeiro governor has been a harsh critic of citizens who are going about their business as usual — as the president has recommended — saying these people are willingly putting their lives, and those of their loved ones, in peril.
