The real number of deaths by Covid-19 could be nearly twice as high as official data shows, according to an analysis by news portal UOL. Due to underreporting, the real death toll could be closer to 2,000, instead of the 1,124 deaths reported as of yesterday.
The delay in reporting deaths also contributes to that. One of the 68 confirmed deaths on Saturday, April 11, had actually happened 25 days before it was registered. The analysis found that overall it takes between 10 and 14 days for a Covid-19 death to become part of the official count. Last week, journalists Brenno Grillo and Gustavo Ribeiro showed how the lack of reliable coronavirus data has kept policymakers from implementing effective measures to combat the outbreak.
