Brazil has 252 confirmed Covid-19 infections, says government

Brazil’s Health Ministry has published an updated report on the spread of the novel coronavirus (Sars-Cov-2) in Brazil. The country now has 252 confirmed infections. Health authorities are also monitoring 2,064 patients, with 1,624 discarded cases.

The country’s two main urban centers, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, lead the way in the number of infected patients—and have already registered local transmission.

The number of infections, however, will certainly go up on Tuesday, as this latest report does not include at least 57 cases reported later by authorities of seven states—Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, and Sergipe—which would bring the actual number of people in Brazil infected with the novel coronavirus to 309.

The federal government may import kits for rapid diagnosis, following recommendations from the World Health Organization to apply coronavirus tests en masse. However, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro will continue—for the time being—to test only patients displaying more severe symptoms.
