Feds launch international operation to dismantle child sex abuse ring

The Federal Police in Brazil’s northernmost state of Roraima launched Operation Hermes this morning, with the aim of investigating the dissemination of child sex abuse images over the internet. A search and seizure operation was carried out in Boa Vista, the state capital.

The action resulted from evidence collected in Spain, during an operation to investigate crimes of prostitution and corruption of minors in the sale of child sex abuse images. Spanish officials uncovered an instant messaging chat group where 43 users exchanged illicit content throughout the world, including Brazil.

Brazilian feds were briefed through Interpol, allowing the investigations to identify the likely culprit on Brazilian soil. The operation seized computers and devices to further investigate the network. Feds also found a small quantity of drugs at the target’s address.

In another operation in São Paulo state, the Federal Police arrested one target caught with child abuse images on his computer. In the northern state of Pará, Feds carried out five search and seizure warrants at the homes of targets investigated for crimes related to child sexual abuse and exploitation.
