A man accused of torching two helicopters belonging to Brazilian environmental protection agency Ibama was arrested by the Federal Police on Wednesday at his mansion in the Center-West city of Goiânia.
Six people have now been taken into custody in connection with the incident. Three eyewitnesses reportedly recognized the man as having organized the crime, which took place on January 24 in the northern city of Manaus.
The man is also accused of being involved in illegal mining activities in Brazil’s North. It is believed the Ibama aircraft were torched to avoid authorities carrying out mining inspections in the area. As The Brazilian Report explained earlier this week, Ibama had tried to cover up the attack, only taking action once it gained press attention.
