Rio expects to celebrate New Year 2022 with a bang

According to giant Latin American online travel agency Despegar, Rio de Janeiro leads all New Year tourist destinations for airline tickets purchased on the company’s website.

Starting today, the city of Rio lifted occupancy restrictions on shopping malls and theaters, following steady improvements in Covid-19 indicators. Mask use in closed spaces remains mandatory. “We are experiencing the best epidemiological scenario since the beginning of the pandemic,” said municipal Health Secretary Daniel Soranz.

The city has vaccinated 98 percent of adults with at least one dose. Sixty percent are fully immunized.

The tourism industry is bullish about the upcoming New Year, with some hotels predicting 100-percent occupancy. According to sector data, some establishments have already booked 80 percent of rooms for the period.
