São Paulo announces vaccination of teenagers

Governor João Doria of São Paulo confirmed on Monday that the vaccination of teenagers between 12 and 17 years old in his state will start on August 18. “Some municipalities requested, and today received, authorization to start vaccinating young people in this age group [12 to 17] because they have already completed the vaccination process for adults over 18 years of age,” said Mr. Doria during a press conference at the Butantan Biological Institute. 

Cities such as Mauá, Ribeirão Pires, and Rio Grande da Serra have already started vaccination in this age bracket.

According to the state’s vaccination calendar, from August 18 to 29, young people between 12 and 17 years old with comorbidities or disabilities can get vaccinated. From August 30 to September 5 it will be the turn of all teenagers between 15 and 17 years old. And by September 12, young people aged between 12 and 14 years old should receive the first dose of immunization.

The confirmation of the schedule comes about two weeks after Mr. Doria complained to the Health Ministry of having received only half the total number of Pfizer vaccines to which the state was entitled. Pfizer continues to be the only vaccine permitted for young people under 18 by Brazil’s federal health regulatory body Anvisa.
