Covid deaths skyrocket among 30 to 49 year-olds

Analysis by Época Magazine shows that people aged between 30 and 49 years old were the hardest hit by the pandemic in the first seven months of 2021, with confirmed or suspected casualties due to Covid-19 increasing by over 200 percent for this age group.

The deaths of citizens aged 30 to 39 years old rose 219 percent, and 207 percent for those aged between 40 and 49. Deaths of people in their 60s rose by 90 percent, while those in their 70s saw an increase of 44 percent, a slowdown widely credited to vaccines.

In an interview with newspaper O Globo, infectious diseases expert Rosana Richtman said young people were more exposed to the second wave of the pandemic, as they make up the bulk of Brazil’s workforce. Moreover, the slow progress of the vaccination campaign left younger age groups unprotected, as people outside priority groups only began receiving jabs as of late May.
