With 17 percent of its population fully vaccinated so far, Brazil has a long way to go before reaching widespread immunity from Covid-19. According to a new study conducted by major public universities, the country must administer another 196 million doses to completely immunize its entire adult population, and this is only expected to be achieved in 2022.
If the current average of daily vaccination is maintained, Brazil would only reach the milestone of widespread immunity (with 90 percent of the adult population immunized) in the first months of next year. Researchers say that while vaccination has picked up the pace in recent weeks, rollouts are still insufficient.
Over 70 million Brazilians have yet to receive their first vaccine dose, and the Health Ministry may have an extra challenge if it decides to give out extra booster shots.
