On Tuesday, Pfizer kicked off clinical trials of its coronavirus vaccine on pregnant women. Roughly 200 Brazilian women will take part in the tests, and results will be monitored by four research centers in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul.
The immunizer is already being used off-label for pregnant women with pre-existing conditions, but researchers will now monitor how and if the mothers will transfer antibodies to their babies, conducting follow-up checks on the infants until they reach six months of age.
Brazilian regulators also greenlit the vaccination of pregnant women with the Chinese-made CoronaVac.
“This is another important step in the fight against Covid-19. Pregnant women have an increased risk of complications and of developing severe infections,” said Pfizer Medical Director Márjori Dulcine, in a statement.
