According to NGO Venezuela United Doctors, at least 513 health care workers — including doctors and nurses — died of Covid-19 since the pandemic began in March 2020. The deaths of 14 such professionals were recorded on April 22 alone.
Besides reporting a total shortage of supplies in several hospitals, the organization says the number of victims among medical staff is “increasing.”
On Twitter, the NGO showed the inconsistency of the government’s official coronavirus figures: Venezuela has confirmed only 2,047 deaths, which many international organizations say is a clear sign of underreporting.
Since last year, Venezuela’s official data suggests the country has the lowest mortality rate in South America. However, local NGOs say the total number of cases and deaths could be at least five times larger than official figures.
