Brazil sets its sights on becoming world’s top grain exporter

Agribusiness has been the driving force of Brazil’s economy for some time now, and the only way is up for the country’s farmers and exporters. In the last ten years, Brazil’s share of the global food market rose from USD 20.6 billion to USD 100 billion. Estimates from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) suggest the country’s produce feeds over 10 percent of the world’s population.

When we look at data from the last 20 years, Brazilian grain production grew 210 percent, while global production grew 60 percent,” says Elisio Contini, a researcher from Embrapa’s Intelligence and Strategic Relations Department (Sire). “We are the world’s fourth-largest grain producer, but the second-largest exporter.”
