Brazilian agriculture on 10 percent of the world’s tables
A new study by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), shows that the country’s agricultural products reach roughly 773 million people around the world — just under 10 percent of the global population. The findings are based on grain and oilseed production data.
Why it matters. Agriculture was the only economic sector to post positive numbers in 2020. Amid a 4.1-percent GDP skid, the sector grew 2 percent despite the pandemic — highlighting its importance for the local economy, especially during a period of deindustrialization.
Agriculture: even better than it looks. The official GDP data only takes into account that which is produced within rural properties. But when we consider the entire agribusiness production chain (inputs, agroindustry, services), growth in 2020 approaches 19 percent, according to think tank FGV Agro.
